Zirconium Crown
A zirconium crown is a full-ceramic cap milled from zirconia. It covers a tooth that has lost too much structure to hold a filling, and it is also the visible unit on most implant crowns and bridges. There is no metal underneath, so there is no grey line at the gum.

Who it suits
- Heavily filled, cracked or root-treated teeth
- Front teeth, where a metal margin would eventually show as a grey shadow

What you should know first
- A crown means the tooth underneath is reduced. Where a filling or an onlay will do the job, that is what we will suggest — a crown is not the default answer to a small problem.
- A crown is matched to the shade of your own teeth. Changing the shade of your whole smile is a different plan, and that plan is veneers.

Crown work is normally completed inside one visit, with the lab stage in between. Your written plan states how many days that means for the number of units in your case.
How is zirconia different from a metal-ceramic crown?
A metal-ceramic crown has a metal core, which is what produces the grey line that appears at the gum as the gum recedes. Zirconia has no metal in it and passes light more like enamel does, so it stays closer to a natural tooth at the edge.
Does the tooth have to be filed down?
Yes. A crown needs space to sit in, so the tooth underneath is reduced. That is irreversible and you should know it before you agree, which is why it is written here rather than mentioned in the chair.
How many days will it take?
Preparation, laboratory work and fitting are normally completed within a single stay of several days. Your written plan gives the day count for your case.
Will they look artificial?
That is a choice, not a property of the material. The mistake is a uniform, opaque, very bright shade across every tooth. Shade and translucency are selected with you, against your face rather than against a shade guide alone.
How long do they last?
Zirconia is hard-wearing, but a crown is still a wearing part. Longevity depends on your bite, whether you grind, and gum health underneath. Anyone quoting you a guaranteed number of years is guessing.
How is the price decided?
Per unit, plus any treatment the tooth needs before it can be crowned. The number of units is set by your case and is itemised in writing before you travel.
