Why two implant quotes for the same mouth are never the same price

The gap is usually in the list, not the discount

Send the same photographs to four clinics and four different numbers come back. The instinct is to read that as four prices for one thing, and to treat the lowest as the best version of the same deal.

It almost never is. An implant quote is a list of parts and appointments, and the quickest way to make the total smaller is to shorten the list. Nothing about the shorter quote is untrue — the work it names really does cost that. It simply is not the whole treatment.

So the useful question is not "which is cheapest" but "what is on this list that is missing from the other one".

What you are actually buying

Three separate things, priced separately, often quoted as one number:

• The fixture — the titanium screw that goes into the bone. Brands differ in how much long-term research sits behind them, and in whether replacement parts will still be manufactured in fifteen years.
• The abutment — the connector between fixture and crown. You never see it and it is the most commonly omitted line.
• The crown — the tooth you do see. Material, and whether it was milled for your mouth or picked from a shade range, both move the price.

A quote that gives one figure for "implant" and does not say which of the three it covers is not yet a quote. Ask for it broken out. A clinic that will not break it out has told you something.

The part nobody mentions until you arrive

The line most often absent from a first quote is the work that has to happen before an implant can go in at all.

• Extractions, if the tooth is still there.
• Bone grafting, if the ridge has narrowed after years without a root loading it.
• Sinus lifting, in the upper back jaw, where the sinus floor sits low.
• Treatment of existing gum disease, which has to be under control before anything is placed.

None of these are upsells invented on arrival. They are visible on a CT scan taken beforehand, which is exactly why a quote written from a photograph cannot include them and a quote written from a scan can.

Time is a cost too

An implant is not a single appointment. Placement, healing, then the permanent crown — with roughly three to six months of integration in between, depending on the jaw and the bone.

That means either two trips, or one trip plus a permanent crown sent to you, or a longer single stay. Each option carries a real cost that sits outside the treatment quote: flights, accommodation, and days not worked. A quote that assumes you can stay for a week and one that assumes two separate visits are not comparable on the treatment line alone.

Add the travel into both before you compare them. Sometimes the more expensive treatment is the cheaper trip.

Questions worth asking every clinic

Send the same list to each one. The differences in the answers will tell you more than the differences in the totals.

• Which implant brand and system, and is it available in my own country if something needs attention later?
• Does the price include the abutment and the final crown, or the fixture only?
• Was this quote written from a CT scan?
• What happens, and what does it cost, if a graft or a sinus lift is needed?
• How many appointments, over how many days, across how many trips?
• Who places the implant, and who makes the crown?
• What is covered if the implant fails to integrate, and for how long?
• What follow-up exists once I am home, and in what language?

Cheap and expensive are both answers to a question

A low quote is not automatically a bad one, and a high quote is not automatically thorough. Both are answers to the question "what does this mouth need" — and the answers differ because the assessments differ.

What matters is whether the assessment was made properly. A plan written from a CT scan, that names its parts, that says how many visits it needs and what happens if something goes wrong, can be compared. A single number cannot be compared with anything.
